Microsoft Patches First Critical Bug in Windows 7 Beta Microsoft Locks Mpeg4 H264 Codecs In Windows 7
Mar 28

On his MSDN blog, Shinobu Takahashi has posted screenshots of a very recent Windows 7 build. It is the first proof of a 706x build, but the changes aren’t very apparent from the screenshot. The build string is “7068.winmain.090321-1322,” which indicates that it was compiled less than a week ago: March 21, 2009, at 1:22 pm.

As you can see, Microsoft has started tweaking the gadgets it will offer by default with Vista’s successor.

With build 7068, we can clearly see that the CPU meter has gone from analog to digital, and that there is a new gadget for battery life. If you compare the Calendar gadget to the old one, you’ll see a ton of changes. Of course, there are more changes than just tweaks to the gadgets, and we’ll know more about those soon enough. Build 7068 was very close to leaking to the public, but I’m sure that this one, or a newer one, will leak before testers get the RC-escrow build next month.

    Knowing…
How Microsoft “always”(IN the past…and, still…) puts out O.S.’s, and almost any other program to the “public”,which are always un-fininshed,and with numerious “bugs”.
Even, when the so-called “final” WINDOWS 7 Operating system(With at least 6 to 7 versions, which I have heard are in the “works”—so far..). Actually hits the pavement ..running.
I will stand back and watch;and, read on the Web—all of the complaints and problems, that I know will come.
And, after at least a year or more,I might consider “upgrading” to it.
If… I can “afford” the version that would be most beneficial to my current internal operating system.
And, knowing Microsoft will be toward the “top” of the heap of ALL of those “versions”. Being that IT will have all of the “bells and whistles” that I’m sure they will convince me..I really need.

I think Windows 7 RULES!!! The Beta 7000 is more stable than Vista Business with SP1 and the transparency of title bar and taskbar make tweaking and themes an unneccessary exercise. Updates keep the system current, the “Troubleshooting” option in right-click menu makes any program work in Windows 7, even some drivers that do not support vista by default. So, Mr Joseph A Williamson, read up on Windows 7 blogs and you will find 99% of testers applaud Windows 7’s smack to Vista.

  5. Luke Savage Says:

Ok, I’ve installed Windows 7 7068 64bit and seems to run smoother than Vista using both cores of the CPU efficiently. However, RAM seems to be the same. It may be less in 32bit but 1.2 to 1.6 GB is the normal usage. All my programs work with the new OS so that’s a plus. All drivers seem to be working correctly. Since I’ve used it for more than a day, Windows 7 is obviously Windows Vista with little tweaks here and there. My wife mentioned the absence of the start menu ‘all programs’. This is a huge downside of Windows 7 but I may get used to it. The whole idea of creating a user operating system is to have a general interface to work from. The user experience is the key ingredient that needs to be in each release of the software. How can we make the user experience better? In my opinion, Windows 7 is better than Vista but still lacks the qualities of Windows XP. What are those qualities? User experience, easy to manage for the administrator, general user mobility, and contains 20 years of windows designs that is the staple of windows. Vista strayed away from this concept and took away the user experience of loyal Windows users. For this, Microsoft has paid the price. However, will Windows 7 immerge as a successful windows generation? Yes, Windows 7 will be successful but not because it has an innovative approach while keeping the fundamentals of Windows. No, it’s because XP is getting too old and losing support from Microsoft. The question remains, is this the start of Windows becoming less important for users? If Google or Linux was to make a move, this would be the time. Windows 7 is nothing more than a big service pack to Vista. I prefer Windows 7 over Vista but not overly excited about it.

    Point by Point Observations
    • Run command dialog is back!
    • Customizing the desktop is much improved
    • Control panel is easier to use and understand
    • Devices and printers is much easier to use
    • Bootup of Office is much quicker
    • Most mainstream Antivirus programs support Windows 7
    • Vista widgets for side panel are now independent
    • Multiple files and windows open are now managed better
    • Alt tab is now previewable as tabbing from one program to the next
    • UAC settings are now customizable. Thank you Microsoft!
    • Remote Desktop has more profiles to choose from.
    • More administrative tools for sharing computers and files within a network
    • Power for monitor is much improved.

After 10-15 minutes, the monitor powers down to a lower contrast and brightness level which saves power. Good implementation and doesn’t have the quirks that most power scheme options have with XP.
More to come in weeks ahead…..
