One of the major problems customers face when upgrading to or purchasing a copy of Windows Vista is the so called “edition chaos”. Windows Vista was released in so many editions that it was complicated to find the most suitable edition for one’s needs. Many users fear that Microsoft will continue the trend of releasing lots of editions. Some would even go so far to estimate that the number of editions for Microsoft’s next operating system will exceed the number of editions of Windows Vista. Boing Boing mocked the edition chaos by announcing that Windows 7 would ship in 20 different editions using elusive names including Windows 7 Home Basic Premium, Windows 7 Big Business and one of our favorites the Windows 7 Penultimate edition.

The most likely scenario is that Microsoft will release about the same editions that shipped at the release of Windows Vista. Screenshots of current Windows 7 builds display the version that Microsoft is shipping to its partners as Windows 7 Ultimate which could be a hint that we will see a Windows 7 Ultimate edition. If Microsoft stays true to that strategy they will most likely release editions like Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Business as well.

The interesting question is if Microsoft will increase or reduce the amount of editions of Windows 7. What is your opinion on the matter? Will it be more or less?

I think, while Microsoft increase the amount of editions in every new release of Windows, costumers will be crazy, and don’t decide which edition to buy. I’ll release only three editions, Windows X Home (for home users), Windows X Enterprise (for companies and enterprises) and Windows X Ultimate (the edition with the previous ones).

I’d like to see 2 editions: a home edition and a business edition. XP has 2 editions too, and we did not want more, did we? tomd906

In vista, they have introduced so many editions, which confuced users…..if they can limit the editions to like 3, it would be ok

I believe that the different editions of vista were a good thing. they allowed the people who don’t use all the new features of vista to not pay for them which saved them money. The only confusion they should take out is take away ultimate extras and re brand ultimate “Home and Business”. I think that the real killer to Microsoft is the different office editions.now they are confusing.

Due to the issue with Vista home basic, I honestly think MS should skip that version. MS should release Home Prem, Business and Ultimate.

MS also needs to make Ultimate more worth purchasing since they have lagged big time with Vista Ultimate Extras.

i could never understand the need for all these upgrades – all they do for me is create problems – i noticed this when i tried to use a form that i got out of works 4.5 – something about i didn’t have enough memory – none of your answer pages seemed to have an answer – i wound up buying these these forms (that were not cheap)some where else – so these upgrades are not very helpful to the small business person – that does not have the time to learn all the neat things that these games ladden programs will do

i use xp and i’m happy with it becose i know that a frend had a relative new pc with home basic 32bit edition. while gaming he has alot of issu’s and error’s even after updating to sp1 he keeps some issu’s.

after a while using xp again he tray premium 64bit sp1 and had no error’s.
so i think the basic can be removed from release becose it don’t even suport basic gaming.
an other frend got same issu a little difrent becose he can only use some vista games compactible with xp (not the games vista only or older games. only the games whare stands xp,vista required on(if thare don’t stand vista it won’t work)
he got an other solution:just stop gaming exept the one he have working so he won’t bay anymore games and hate windows becose of it(all becose thare is’t a good alternative. linux is dificult to get used to after only using windows.)

    With Microsoft—
“GREED”…really has NO number. Who knows.. Maybe three, like most I’ve read, from the question that was posted. Or, it could be as many as Vista.. Who knows;except, good ole M.S..
It may be, like what happen with that complete blunder “ME”..What a disaster…mess.. First, they(M.S.) create something that isn’t “proofed-out”,dump it on the people(US)–then, watch all those e-mails come into their main area— Then, piece be piece…make “UP-DATES”, to try to correct the “errors” in a program that wasn’t really ready for release to the general public(you & me..) in the first place. After”ME” then came “XP”(thank…good ole M.S.)
“XP” was the FIX for “ME”—did you know that??? Then, comes Vista(Opps’–problems, again…) Now, we here of “Window 7″—the FIX for Vista… Glad I didn’t buy Vista from what I’ve read and heard from computer techs’ on that system.
Too many Pros’ and Cons’–for me..

  15. Marcelo Says:

I think they should only create one edition with a full package of tools and services, and give the user the chance to choose the option that fits on his needs.

I am just sick of Microsoft rolling out new OS’s. I will stick with Vista. Can’t someone roll out a Linux system that installs on one partition like windows? ps I tried Windows 7 RC1 and could not connect to our wireless home broadband. Crap!!! I wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy.
