Microsoft have embraced video like never before with the launch of Windows 7. One of the most useful of these videos is a quick tutorial on how to upgrade your PC from Windows XP.

The upgrade from XP is especially important to Microsoft. This is because of the sheer volume of people who skipped Vista due to its bad press and sluggish performance.
You can’t do an in-place upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. This is because the two operating systems are so completely different in structure. The only way to install Windows 7 if you are still using XP is to format your hard disk and start again with a clean install.
You can watch the video on how to make the upgrade process from XP as painless as possible here.

If you format and do a clean install can you still use the UPGRADE? Will it ask for the XP CD?

You lost me at “Just go out and get a new hard drive…” They knew that Vista was a flop, that most users stuck with XP, but they went ahead with this convaluted installation procedure. One wonders, what else about Windows 7 is as poorly thought out… or driven by hubris? Hopefully, by the time XP becomes totally obsolete, there will be an open source or cloud replacement. Till then, I’m not getting suckered into an “upgrade”.
